Change Your Outlook to Lower Your Stress

Getting Started

What if you could change the way you think about stress? And what if that could bring more meaning and joy to your life?

Changing how you think and act can actually rewire your brain. It can help you feel happier and healthier.

Techniques include:

Expanding your view.

What you think affects how you feel. If you tell yourself that your life is overwhelming, it's more likely to feel that way.

Avoiding negative self-talk.

Instead, be kind to yourself. Don't take things too personally. And try to see both sides of a situation.

Practicing gratitude and compassion.

This helps your body release more "feel good" hormones and fewer stress hormones. So think of people you're thankful for—and say "thanks." Try to accept what isn't perfect—in yourself and others.

Trying a new response.

For example, when you feel impatient while stuck in a long line, imagine being at your favorite place.
